ESRC DTC Studentships

The Centre for Criminology is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as a Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) and has received two ESRC funded scholarships. These studentships can be either two +3 studentships which each fund the study of a three-year DPhil in Criminology or one +3 studentship which funds a three-year DPhil in Criminology and one 1+3 studentship which funds a 1-year Masters* followed by a three-year DPhil in Criminology.

For UK students these studentships cover the cost of fees for three years (+3 studentships) or four years (1+3 studenthips) together with a stipend for each year commencing at £13,590 (2010-11 rates) per annum. For EU students, the studentship covers the costs of fees only.

To be eligible for the 1+3 studentship, applicants must have gained a high 2:1 (or international equivalent) degree by the start of the MSc programme (September). A successful candidate can take either of the two MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice courses, not just the Research Methods version. However, if the candidate takes the non-research methods Masters, s/he will be required to take additional research methods training during the first year of his/her doctorate to meet ESRC requirements.

To be eligible for a +3 studentship, applicants must have gained a high 2:1 (or international equivalent) masters degree by the start of the DPhil programme (October). Under the new DTC regulations set by the ESRC, this masters degree does not necessarily need to have ESRC accreditation. Students applying with a non-accredited masters degree will need to take extra research methods training during the first year of their doctorate to meet ESRC requirements.
